About

Welcome to the Deer Canyon Parent Staff Organization (DCPSO)

At Deer Canyon Elementary School, we believe that a strong, connected school community lays the foundation for student success. The Deer Canyon Parent Staff Organization (DCPSO) is a nonprofit group made up of dedicated parents, caregivers, and staff working together to enhance the educational experience for every student on campus.

Founded in 2023, DCPSO carries forward the legacy of the former PTA and Foundation- while looking ahead to the future. Our mission is to ensure that all students have access to a well-rounded, engaging, and enriching school experience that prepares them for a diverse and ever-changing world.

There is a growing gap between what the school district provides and what our students truly need to thrive. DCPSO exists to bridge that gap. We fund essential programs, staff, and resources that help maintain Deer Canyon as a high-performing, vibrant learning environment.

From STEAM instruction and physical education to classroom enrichment and community-building events, your support allows us to deliver the kind of education our students deserve.

We are committed to being thoughtful stewards of every donation and making financial decisions that reflect the best interests of Deer Canyon students and staff.

Together, we can continue to make Deer Canyon Elementary School a place where every child feels supported, inspired, and empowered. Whether you’re a new or returning family- or a community partner- we invite you to join us!

Our History

From Two Groups to One Mission: The Story Behind the DCPSO

Before 2023, Deer Canyon was supported by two separate parent-led groups: the PTA and the Deer Canyon Foundation.

The Deer Canyon Foundation, established in 2001 by a dedicated group of parents and staff, was created in response to the school’s limited access to technology. Over the years, the Foundation funded the purchase of LCD projectors, computers, computer furniture, and provided technology training to enhance learning on campus.

The PTA was a volunteer organization made up of parents and teachers who focused on campus-wide programming and events, while also supporting the broader mission of the state and national PTA organizations.

Originally, both groups centered their efforts on raising funds to meet the technological needs of our school. However, in recent years, significant statewide budget cuts have increased the need for local fundraising to support a broader range of essential programs. Poway Unified remains one of the lowest-funded unified school districts in San Diego County.

To streamline efforts and strengthen collaboration between families and staff, the PTA and Foundation unified in 2023 to form the Deer Canyon Parent Staff Organization (DCPSO). The PSO combines the missions of both groups under one cohesive organization—focused on building financial and community support to enhance the overall student experience. Today, the DCPSO helps fund vital programs such as PE, STEAM, choir, school assemblies, and campus-wide events.
